Smash cake, the first birthday photography session

A cake all of her own, and hands right in it

from 8 months to 2 years

The little girl sits down in front of her first cake and grabs it with her hands. I stay back and photograph: her face at the first taste, her fingers in the cream. For once, no one tells her to mind her dress.

What is a smash cake?

A smash cake is a photography session in the studio, in which a baby of around one year old is given a cake all to themselves and eats it with their hands. It's done from 8 months to 2 years, usually around the first birthday.

The name says exactly what happens: the cake gets smashed. The cake isn't cut into slices and isn't shared with anyone, it's all theirs.

I run the sessions myself, Alessia Zitoli, at the studio in Via Umberto 230, Trani. It's about thirty minutes' drive from Bari, and much less from Barletta, Bisceglie, Andria, Molfetta and Corato.

At what age is a smash cake done?

From 8 months to 2 years. The best time is from 11 to 18 months, when the baby can sit up alone and uses their hands to pick things up.

Before 8 months, the cake is still just something to look at and push away. After 2 years, many children have already learned not to get messy, and wait for permission before digging their fingers in.

If the birthday was a few weeks ago it makes no difference: at thirteen or fourteen months the photos come out just the same. If it hasn't happened yet, let me know as soon as you have a rough time in mind, because the cake needs to be ordered and we choose the day together.

What changes month by month

From 8 months to 2 years, every baby meets the cake, but not in the same way.

Before 8 months

Pushes it away

At that age, the cake is still just something to look at and push away. The session gets put off by a few weeks.

From 8 to 10 months

It starts to become possible

They've only recently learned to sit and use their hands cautiously. The photos come out more tender, with less movement.

From 11 to 18 months

The best time

They sit up alone and use their hands to pick things up. This is the part of the window where the session works best.

Up to 2 years

Still within the window

If the birthday was a few weeks ago it makes no difference: at thirteen or fourteen months the photos come out just the same.

After 2 years

They wait for permission

Many children have already learned not to get messy, and wait for permission before digging their fingers in. From here on, the party with guests tells the story better.

How it works

These windows come from experience, not fixed rules: if your baby already has a few extra days, write to me anyway and we will see what we can do.

How a smash cake session works

The order is always the same: clean portraits first, then the cake. It doesn't work the other way round, because after the cake the baby is no longer presentable in front of a backdrop.

The setup

I set up the backdrop and the floor before you arrive: the letters ONE, the balloons, the bunting, the teddy bear. I need to know what the cake looks like, because a white cake disappears against a light backdrop.

The portraits, before the cake

I start with her dressed and clean: a few portraits sitting down, standing if she's already walking, and photos with you. I take these now, because after the cake it won't be possible any more.

The cake

I put the cake in front of her and step out of the way. Some just try it with one finger and stop there, others dive in with both hands. I photograph from a distance, without saying a word.

What to bring to a smash cake

The cake, a full change of clothes, a towel and the wipes you usually use. I'll take care of the setup.

Bring something to eat afterwards too, if the baby usually has lunch around that time: they'll spread more cake around than they actually eat.

I'll clean the floor, so don't worry about picking up the pieces while I'm photographing.

The cake for the smash cake: who brings it and what should it be like?

You bring the cake. You know the baby's tastes and the ingredients they've already tried, and if there's any doubt about an allergy, the question goes to the paediatrician before the baker.

For that age, a simple cake works best: a few layers and a soft cream, no hard icing and no small decorations that can come off. If you'd rather make it at home with things the baby already eats, that's easier too.

In front of the camera, what matters is texture. A cream that gives way under little fingers photographs better than fondant, which stays smooth and doesn't respond to touch.

There's no need to go overboard on size. At one year old, they work with a piece about the size of their two hands.

Smash cake at 1 year old: photos of the first birthday

What's left of the first birthday is almost always phone photos: the table blurred, someone walking past just as you blow the candle out for them. Smash cake is about bringing home portraits of the baby alone, in focus and with the right light.

At one year old, they don't yet know how to pull a face for the camera. They look at the cake and look at you, they're not thinking about the lens. To me, these are the most honest photos you can take of a baby.

A session gives you the opening portraits and the sequence with the cake. What to do with them afterwards, you can decide in your own time: albums and prints are a separate matter, and you don't need to decide on the day itself.

Smash cake or birthday photography session?

These are two different services, and you can book both. If you're after photos of the party with guests, the right page is birthday photography session.

What's included in the session

The session includes the setup and the post production of the photos I deliver to you. Prints and albums are chosen afterwards, if you want them.

The cake is never included: you bring it, and it's better that way, because you choose it to suit the baby.

Message me and I'll send you the available days and the quote for the session.

When to book a smash cake

Message me as soon as you have a rough time in mind, even before you've ordered the cake. We choose the day together, at a time well away from nap time: a tired baby won't even look at the cake.

The fastest way is WhatsApp. Tell me how many months old the baby is and which month you're thinking of, and I'll get back to you with the available days.

Frequently asked questions

Can a smash cake be done at home?

No, I do it in the studio, in Trani. You need the right light and a floor that can be got messy without worrying, and a living room has neither. I have the setup ready: you bring the cake and a change of clothes, and you'll find the rest all set up.

Does the baby have to already be walking to do a smash cake?

No. It's enough that they can sit up alone and use their hands to pick things up, usually from around 11 months onwards. Those who already walk tend to circle round the cake and sometimes get their feet in it too, and that works just as well.

How long does it take to get to the studio from Bari?

About thirty minutes by car. The studio is at Via Umberto 230, Trani, and it takes even less from Barletta, Bisceglie, Andria, Molfetta and Corato. If you're coming from further away, let me know when we set the date, so we can choose a time that doesn't have you driving during nap time.

What if the baby doesn't touch the cake?

It happens, and it doesn't change much. If they just look at it, the cake stays as a backdrop and I carry on with the portraits and the photos with you together. I never talk anyone into putting their fingers in it, because a baby who's pushed into it shows in every shot.

Can parents be in the smash cake photos?

Yes, and I'll ask you to be. The hands holding them steady and the face of whoever's watching from the side tell that age just as much as the baby does. If older siblings are coming too, let me know when we set the day, so I can prepare the space: there are sessions in the archive with two children together.

Other services

Before the first birthday there's the rest of the year, and the party with guests is a separate service.
