What is a smash cake?
It's the first birthday photography session: I put a cake all to themselves in front of the child and let them get on with it. It's done in the studio in Trani, half an hour's drive from Bari.
The name gives away how it ends. I put the cake down and step out of the way: what I photograph is the face at that first taste and the fingers sinking in.
What age is a smash cake for
From 8 months to 2 years old. The best time is between 11 and 18 months, when the child can sit up alone and uses their hands to bring things to their mouth: the first birthday falls right in the middle.
Before 8 months, sitting up is still unsteady and the cake stays something to look at rather than get into. After 2 years old, it's common for them to ask to be cleaned up at the first dirty finger, which is fair enough, but it leaves few photos.
Can it be done after the first birthday?
Yes. The window runs from 8 months to 2 years old, so the birthday is the centre of it, not the deadline. A child of 14 or 16 months is still right on time.
The party gets planned first and the photos come after, and the weeks go by in the meantime: it's not too late. Past 2 years old, it moves on to birthday parties, which are a different service.
How a smash cake session works
It's done in the studio and the child sets the pace. I prepare the lighting, give them the cake and then wait: some dive in with their hands within the first few seconds, others circle the plate for a while before deciding.
I don't ask for poses. A baby of 11 months can't be directed, so the session follows them: if they get tired, we stop and pick up again later. And if they want you close, come close, because you're in the photos too.
What cake do you need for the smash cake?
Small and soft, with no hard decorations. It needs to give way under the hand of a baby of 11 months: if it resists, they try twice and then give up.
On the ingredients, the paediatrician has the final say, especially under a year old. The candles come off before the photos, and it's best not to have any loose bits of sugar decoration lying around.
What to bring to the smash cake session
Bring a full change of clothes and the wipes you normally use. Add the outfit you want in the photos and something dry to go home in.
If your child has a comfort object, bring that along too. And choose a time well away from nap time: a child who has slept looks at the cake with more curiosity than one who's worn out and about to fall asleep.

Does the child really get messy?
Yes, and that's the whole point of the session. Between 11 and 18 months, hands go everywhere, so the cake ends up on the face, in the hair and on the bottom. That's why I ask you for a full change of clothes and the wipes you normally use. If you'd prefer a clean first birthday, we can do portraits without the cake, and that becomes a different session.
What if they don't touch the cake?
I wait. I never push a child's hand into the cake, not even for a photo. Between 11 and 18 months, sometimes a parent has to give them the first little piece, and that's fine. If they really want nothing to do with it, there are still the portraits and the photos with you, which are the first birthday photos all the same.
Can we, the parents, be in the photos too?
Yes, and I'd recommend it. In first birthday photos, the parents' hands find their way into the frame almost on their own: the one keeping balance and the one wiping up. If you'd like a portrait all together, we do that before the cake arrives, while you're still dry, and then move on to the messy part.
When is it best to book?
It's best to message me as soon as you know the month. The useful window runs from 8 months to 2 years old, so there's no rush, but marking the period in advance helps you choose the time of day instead of taking whatever's left. The exact day gets fixed later, once you know their sleep pattern and what time of day they're in a good mood.
